This book is no so much an autobiography, as it is a series of anecdotes. The author tells us much of the what, but little of the how and none of the why. The poor man has no sense of drama and no clue how to stretch a scene to put the reader in suspense. For an example, a fever that nearly killed him and that took him years to recover from, is dealt with in just 1 paragraph.That being said, it's an entertaining book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the South African history or mining technology of the 1870's.

Fantastic insight into days gone by
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. It is a rather boring title but the author tells a rattling good tale and he was so young when he had to face all these trials of courage fortitude and resilience. I was apalled at the reckless shooting of wildlife for the sheer lust of shooting but I guess that was true of those times. Just how he survived in those difficult circumstances is amazing.
The author provides a first-hand account of his travels through South Africa in the early days of diamond and gold prospecting. It is particularly interesting to read about the large numbers of animals that were present. He describes various encounters with lions that put one in the the scene and almost hearing the roars and growls of the lions.
Recommended if you want to get a glimpse life and times of an adventurer in the wild Southern African country side.
