The Last Horseman (Audible Audio Edition) David Gilman Frank Grimes Wholestory Audiobooks Books
The author has researched the historical background and with some liberties as is normal in a work of fiction, written an exciting tale. A father's love of son and a son's wish to become a man worthy of a parent's respect is a common theme. Here this is played out in a war to be shortly over shadowed by the Great War 1914-18, which we are in the midst of remembering one hundred years later. An American retired soldier and attorney, with his ex-Buffalo soldier friend travel to South Africa during the 2nd Boer War in the year 1900. They search amidst the chaos to locate a son who is attempting to prove his worth.
An heroic Irish regiment is prominent in this novel, an inconvenient truth for many Irish Nationalists. One finds also Irish Fenians fighting with the "boogers" {Boers} as well as British dragoons led by an arrogant and cruel Captain. There is also a compassionate English woman fighting the "good fight" to halt suffering among Boer women and children held in camps. Their suffering a result of British military and government ineptitude and purposeful neglect.
A tale full of "players" living out the circumstances they find themselves in, all contribute to a satisfying and multi-layered read.
Recommended.

The Last Horseman (Audible Audio Edition) David Gilman Frank Grimes Wholestory Audiobooks Books Reviews
David Gilman writes about the Anglo-Boer War between 1899 and 1900 in “The Last Horseman”. Irish-American Joseph Radcliffe and his close friend and butler, Ben Pierce, travel to South Africa to search for Radcliffe’s seventeen-year-old son, Edward, who has run away from home. Edward thinks he is heading for adventure, but soon realises he is facing disaster.
Joseph must mend bridges between himself and Edward, who has grown up without his mother, a fact for which he blames Joseph. While there is much more to the backstory it is the grit and action of war that takes centre stage in this novel. Gilman’s descriptions of horses and horsemanship are beautiful.
A war story presented as history is bound to raise questions. David Gilman has tried to present both sides, but I have reservations about some of the information and predominantly English sources used. The statement that the Boers were made up of Dutch peasant stock is also incorrect. The fact is they consisted, amongst other nationalities, of Dutch, Germans and French aristocracy who fled France at the time of the French Revolution.
I rate this book 3.5 stars.
This book was an entertaining read with a good plot and plenty of entertaining characters. The historical content was also good as I haven't read many books on the Boer war.
was fun to read... would have preferred a different end
Well researched and historically accurate, with compelling characterisation of the protagonists, David Gilmans books stand out amongst a sea of oh so predictable formula driven modern fiction...
Beautifully written , well researched and difficult to put down. One of the best historical novels I have read in a long time. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
I love david gilmans master of war series. This book is ok but much slower than the medieval series. Still its description of the war in South Africa is a story worth reading
